Are You Out-sourcing Self-belief?

Annie Gibbins

So, you’re sitting among your friends at brunch or wrapping up a business meeting, and you have this niggling feeling that you can’t quite put your finger on.

Your friends adore you, and your colleagues respect you, but somewhere lurking beneath the surface is your inner voice heckling your ability to succeed.

Outsourcing our self-belief means waiting for other people to validate us, our ideas, and our dreams. Sure, we need encouragement and support, but we also need to back ‘our brand’ first. If we cannot champion our inner critic, then how is our future going to stand a chance?

That’s not to say you are not a success.

I have no doubt that you are kicking some serious goals and taking your future very seriously.

But how much power do you give to your inner voice when all it's saying is:

  • “Are you crazy? This idea will never work!”
  • “What were you thinking? You’ll never earn that much money.”
  • “What if you embarrass yourself, or worse still, you fail?”
  • “What if you damage your reputation?”
  • “What on earth will people think of you?”

The fear of failure is a very real and valid thought. But, it can also be the greatest motivator in the world.

Negative thoughts tend to enter our minds the moment fear steps in. So, we stop, deter, and forget the challenge that we are quietly craving. We think our ego is helping us to make better decisions, but in fact, our ego is putting the brakes on.

Think of it like this: negativity is a pain point, a threshold, but negativity is not a radar that will navigate us to success. It’s one thing having an idea, but it's another putting it out into the world. We all have concepts, innovations, and ideas. Are you fixed on the perfect outcome or are you prepared to tweak, learn, fail, and try again?

But wait, there’s that voice again saying:

“Are you crazy? This idea will never work!”

As entrepreneurs, business leaders, communities, and friends, we have all heard and read affirmations and quotes about 'stepping outside our comfort zones'. Most of them are super inspirational, but we tend to leave an affirmation there, on the page, in a post, and via a social media thread.

So, I want you to get comfortable with failure.

How many times have you done something for the first time and become an overnight expert… be honest?

Success is a process, not an action. It doesn’t always happen the first go. Loosen up your attachment to idea number one, and be open to idea number two, three, or four.

Do it differently because that’s ok too.

Before the fear of failure kicks in, I want to leave you with a question:

Is your comfort-zone threshold truly being challenged?

Next time you have an idea, share it with the world. Better still, share it with The Women’s Business Tribe!

Let us champion you.

And make the impossible, possible.

Stay fierce,

Annie Gibbins
